This Saturday night (November 11), the Sprintcar
Racing Association of Victoria Super Sprint Series will head to
the New South Wales and Victorian border for round two at
Moama’s Heartland Raceway. The spacious track will allow some of
Victoria’s best to run wide open, which is sure to create some
action-packed Sprintcar racing.
Last season the SRA Super Sprint Series had multiple attempts at
staging a round at the Heartland Raceway venue, but
unfortunately wet weather intervened and no SRA racing was seen
in the thriving townships of Echuca and Moama. This Saturday
night however, racing is a certainty and one driver that is
particularly looking forward to the occasion is local hometown
favourite Travis “Squizzy” Mills.
Mills, a former Compact Speedcar Australian Champion, will be
racing in front of a number of local sponsors, family and
friends in his own car for the first time after previously
racing for Jordan Motorsport and Craig Lawless.
“We’ve got three or four local sponsors that will be watching us
Saturday night and I’m really looking forward to performing in
front of them for the first time in our own car and obviously
putting in a good result,” said Mills during the week.
Mills purchased the car he steered in the second half of last
season - the Craig Lawless Cool Chassis - and the 26-year-old
claimed fourth position in the overall points count for the SRA
Super Sprint Series. He is hoping to reproduce the form that got
him to that position, but round one at Geelong’s Avalon Raceway
a fortnight ago was not the best way to begin the SRA season for
Mills.
“We had a fuel problem at Avalon that seen us run out of fuel in
the B Main,” said Mills. “We sent everything down to John Sidney
and the fuel problem as well as a couple of others things are
fixed and we are raring to go racing on Saturday night.”
Joining Mills in the field will be the reigning SRA Series
Champion, John Vogels, from Simpson. Vogels is currently sitting
second in the points after round one and this Saturday night
will present an imperative opportunity for the south west
favourite to gain a lead in a series he is aiming to win three
times in a row.
Making his first SRA appearance for season 2006-07 is the first
and only SRA feature winner at Heartland Raceway, Grant
Anderson. Way back in mid April last year Anderson took the
victory and from that point he has kicked on in improvement,
including contesting events in Western Australia and fairing
extremely well. ‘Ando’ will enter Saturday night as a true
contender in the V#37 Foster Chassis.
One driver that is definitely going to add some spice to the
racing will be 18-year-old Jamie Veal from Warrnambool. In round
one at Avalon Raceway, Veal showed everyone he is a star on the
rise in Sprintcar racing by finishing fifth. The former Formula
500 leading light will relish the big track this Saturday night,
where his heavy right foot will do all of the work in an attempt
to consolidate on his current seventh placing in the points
score.
Others to be in the 25 plus strong line up include Brett
Milburn. ‘The Jet’ is third on points approaching round two and
the V#68 is sure to be in the mix once again. Rod Dalton,
supporting a striking new paint scheme, established some fast
form in round one and as a result finds himself in eighth
position on the points table ahead of Daniel Newnham and Brett
Smith, two others that will be at Heartland Raceway keen to stay
in the top ten of the SRA Super Sprint Series.
‘The Flying Dutchman’ Mike Van Bremen, a two-time SRA Super
Sprint Series Champion, failed to make the A-Main field in round
one and the former World Series Sprintcars driver will be
seeking a better result this time around. To do so, he will bolt
in the teams “killer” Maxwill engine to achieve maximum
horsepower that could prove vital at Heartland Raceway.
Three South Australians – Glen Sutherland, Steven Lines and
Wayne Rowett – will make the journey along with New South
Welshman Chris Muir to Moama in a bid to upset the strong
Victorian contingent in what will be a ripping contest for the
second round of the SRA Super Sprint Series.
Heat racing will have even more significance this Saturday night
and beyond with Revolution Racegear a welcomed addition to the
list of valued supporters of the SRA season. At seasons end,
Revolution Racegear will supply the driver with the most heat
wins with the latest spec suit the X Tech.
