| Having emerged in recent years as one of the new breed of talented drivers in the Super Sedan division, Victoria's Lucas Roberts has now established himself as a bona fide star in the category with a record of success that is the envy of many vastly more experienced competitors. At 36 years of age, he is a veritable youngster in comparison to those drivers who have dominated the category for so long and, in many cases, continue to do so.
It was the 2003/2004 season that saw Lucas rise to prominence when he upstaged some higher profile competitors to win the 2003/2004 Victorian Super Sedan Championship at Nyora Speedway. Determined to prove his success wasn't a fluke, he journeyed to Mildura's Timmis Speedway the next season and successfully defended his crown, silencing any detractors along the way. The very next season, Lucas created history when he became only the second driver to win three consecutive Victorian Championships, triumphing on the Heartland Raceway circuit owned and built by his father, from then on he was known to his fans as the “MOAMA MAULER”
Lucas also took part in the inaugural National Super Sedan Series in which he was plagued by problems throughout the series but still managed to accumulate enough points to secure 7th place outright in the series.
He also fronted up to the next National Super Sedan Series in which he stuck another run a bad luck but was still very competitive, he also finished 3rd in the Australian Title along with his 3 Victorian Championship titles and a South Australian title just for good measure.
Lucas is a very much improved competitor since he competed in the nationals against the best of the best that Australia could possibly offer.
With another brand new car for the 2007/2008 season Lucas started off very well again and was poised to win the feature race at Adelaide after some impressive driving in the heats, but alas the rain started and then the remainder of the meeting was declared a rain out and spoilt his chance to stand on the top of the podium once again.
After that he raced at Avalon but had some problems down there and after a few further tweeks and adjustments to the race car he fronted up at Wangaratta and took his place on the top of the podium once again, the car was absolutely awesome and as the word got around the Roberts team was made an offer for the car that couldn’t be refused and so the new car was sold and off to it’s new owner in Western Australia, it was purchased by Dusty Higgs and from all information I have received he is a very happy man, now we have two X Roberts cars running around over in the west the Aylett team has the other one which is also burning up the tracks.
Lucas was also invited to the West to drive one of Liam Bourke’s cars in which he was placed 4th outright in the feature, to which all parties where happy with his performance.
Fans of the Roberts Team were bitterly disappointed when they heard Lucas had sold his car and weren’t sure if the would see him again in a Super Sedan and the rumours had him in Sprint Cars and all sorts of things right down to Gogomobile racing! (No not the Dart)
But I am Happy to say the team have purchased Mick Nicolas old car and are busy preparing it for the up and coming feature races, they were to race at Hobart on the Australia day weekend but some parts didn’t arrive in time to have the car prepared for that one but they are now very hopeful to have the car ready for the Grand Prix at Latrobe, Tasmania this coming weekend, 1st and 2nd Feb
Then if all goes well it’s back to the mainland to tackle the Vic title, Australian Title and maybe another crack at the South Australian title once again.
We have been told to watch out for the “Flying Dragon” at the Australian Title in Mildura, but the one they will all have to watch out for is the “Moama Mauler” who is now on the prowl…..
